Molasses Spray System Improves Feed Coating and Operator Safety
An animal feed manufacturer in New Zealand was adding molasses to a ribbon mixer using a manual pouring method. This approach resulted in uneven distribution throughout the batch, leading to inconsistent coating and clumping in the final product.

Our Solution
To address these issues, Spraying Systems Co. designed and installed an automated molasses spray system that delivers controlled, repeatable dosing directly into the ribbon mixer, improving product consistency and reducing manual handling. The system includes a heated pressure pot fitted with a heating mat to maintain the correct viscosity for spraying, ensuring consistent flow. Molasses is delivered through three spray nozzles positioned within the mixer to distribute the liquid evenly during the mixing process, improving coating uniformity and reducing clumping.
A PLC-based timer controller automatically actuates a motorised ball valve, allowing molasses to flow to the nozzles for a preset duration before closing. This provides a simple and reliable method of dosing without requiring complex operator input. The system is fully integrated with the existing ribbon mixer.
The upgrade provides consistent product coating and repeatable dosing for each batch, while reducing manual handling and improving operator safety. The system is simple to operate and reliable, delivering predictable, high-quality results with every mix.
With the automated spray system in place, the customer is now achieving more uniform feed coating, safer handling, and a more efficient mixing process, giving smoother operations, consistent results, and greater confidence with every batch.
