About
At age 15, Matthew started as an apprentice Plant Heavy Duty Mechanic, learning about hydraulic, electrical, and mechanical systems by working on forklifts and bobcats. During this time, mechanics relied solely on their expertise to diagnose issues, without the aid of computers. Matthew was taught how to use Root Cause Analysis (RCA), a critical skill for effectively addressing and preventing problems. To this day, Matthew uses RCA in his work, as it has contributed to his comprehensive understanding of proper dust control measures.
After completing his apprenticeship, Matthew worked with road sweepers and extraction trucks, gaining experience with larger truck repairs and complex systems He noticed that the original design of the road sweepers often failed, so he took it upon himself to design and implement a new electrical and pneumatic system for the road sweeper. His new design proved to be simpler, easier to maintain, and more reliable, quickly making it the most efficient road sweeper in the fleet. Matthew achieved this by identifying the root causes of the problems and coming up with a better solution.
A few years later, Matthew transitioned into the mining industry, focusing on mobile maintenance and repairing mining equipment. He also gained experience on the processing side of the mine, gaining a deeper understanding of mining operations. Following an injury at work, Matthew decided to pursue a Bachelor of Software Engineering degree. This program covered a wide range of engineering practices, including mechanics, electrical systems, and mechatronics. Through his education, he developed a strong foundation in electrical instrumentation and programming, essential skills for his future work with spray nozzles and spray systems.
Since 2011, Matthew been an integral member of the team at Spraying Systems Co. Australia, based in Perth, specialising in dust control within the mining industry. Using his previous engineering education and experience, Matthew collaborates closely with the engineering and fabrication teams to develop cutting-edge spray solutions tailored for dust control in mining operations.
When designing spray systems, Matthew ensures they are easy to maintain for operators and maintenance personnel. He values easy maintenance, knowing that the easier it is to maintain, the more likely maintenance will be done. In addition to his design work, Matthew conducts thorough on-site spray assessments for mines throughout Western Australia. Following each assessment, Matthew delivers a comprehensive report to the plant, detailing any identified issues, dust emission levels, and recommendations for optimising their operations.
Matthew has earned the nickname "The Dust Guru" within the mining industry due to his expertise in the field of dust control. When it comes to dust control related questions at Spraying Systems Co. Australia, he’s the one everyone turns to. If you’re struggling with dust control issues at your mine, reach out to Matthew “The Dust Guru” Hayward for expert assistance.
