PROBLEM

A British brick manufacturer wanted to recreate the distinctive antique aging effect commonly seen on traditional clay bricks. However, their modern pressed-brick production process made it difficult to achieve this appearance with consistency.

The method they previously used, was a manual technique that was imprecise with inconsistent results.

With our help, we tried getting our customer to have a more and automated approach. Our solution delivered the desired aesthetic effect with reliable consistency and improved production efficiency.

To reproduce the antique flecked finish with precision, our engineers designed a custom spray setup with our AutoJet® E1850+ Spray Controller: the heart of the system that ensures complete control over flow, timing, and spray pattern. Paired with an agitating pressure vessel, the setup maintains a perfectly mixed coating material for consistent application. A compact six-gun configuration, each equipped with SUJ15-stainless teel spray setups, provides fine, adjustable control across the full width of the brick line.

This configuration allows operators to dial in the exact degree of "flecking" - from subtle speckling to a more pronounced aged effect - simply by adjusting atomizing air and flow parameters through the controller's user-friendly interface.

RESULTS

The new spray solution gives our customer full control over the antique effect: eliminating the inconsistencies of the manual process and ensuring a uniform result across every batch. Beyond improving quality and repeatability, the system also enabled the company to introduce a new product style to the market, broadening their portfolio and boosting sales potential.
