Seed Company Saves with AutoJet® Spray System

A seed manufacturer needed to improve the application of a protective coating on corn seeds. The use of the AutoJet 1550+ Modular Spray System has enabled the manufacturer to double the number of seeds coated in a single shift.

Problem:
A seed manufacturer needed to improve the application of a protective coating on corn seeds. Multiple workers were manually spraying the seeds on a moving conveyor. To ensure full coverage, the workers were over-applying the coating. In addition to being wasteful, the process was time-intensive and was the limiting factor on production increases.

Solution:
An AutoJet 1550+ Modular Spray System is now in use and requires no manual intervention. A five-gallon (19-liter) stainless steel pressure tank delivers the coating solution to two electrically-actuated PulsaJet® spray nozzles mounted over the conveyor. The spray controller turns the nozzles on and off very quickly to control the flow rate and makes automatic adjustments when operating conditions like line speed change to ensure uniform coverage with minimal waste.

Results:
The use of the AutoJet 1550+ Modular Spray System has enabled the manufacturer to double the number of seeds coated in a single shift. Manual labor has been eliminated and coating use has decreased by 25% due to the precision application provided by the AutoJet system. The result is an annual savings of more than US$100,000 for the manufacturer. The system cost was offset in less than two months.
