Use Less Water Without Sacrificing Tank Cleaning Efficacy

The dairy industry faces many challenges in maintaining sanitary conditions in its processing tanks.

  • Removing stubborn, high-fat residues
  • Preventing bacterial contamination
  • Larger and longer that make achieving the necessary reach, coverage, and impact a greater challenge
  • Cleaning around obstructions or in hard to reach areas
  • Excessive water that is cost prohibitive and has an unsustainable impact on the environment
  • Regulation and enforcement standards are constantly changing

When addressing these challenges, dairy processors must ensure superior product quality, optimize water and chemical use, improve worker safety, all while still adhering to the highest standards of hygiene and sanitation

Efficient Tank Cleaning Solutions

Maintaining hygiene standards in dairy processing is critical. In order to achieve this, processors utilize:

When done right, this can be accomplished while also gaining significant water savings while ensuring thorough sanitation.

By integrating our advanced tank cleaning systems, dairy processors can reduce downtime, lower water usage, and ensure compliance with industry hygiene standards.

But it takes more than equipment to ensure proper cleaning of your tanks, totes, vats, drums and more. It takes experience and expertise in addition to an extensive product line. Dairy processors depend on Spraying Systems Co. for our broad spectrum of tank cleaning solutions and our unmatched expertise in helping customers clean all their vessels thoroughly and quickly. Whether your operations require gentle rinsing or the removal of tough residues, we have the right product for any tank measuring up to 100 ft. (30.5 m) in diameter. The goal is to ensure tanks are cleaned thoroughly, in the least amount of time, using the least amount of water/chemicals possible.

Our tank cleaners are available in a range of flow rates and materials. Some are available with different coverages, nozzle configurations, choice of connection styles, extension lengths, and more.

Choosing The Right Tank Cleaning Machine For Your Operation

High-Impact Cleaning

is required to remove stubborn residues such as layers of a dried substance. Tank cleaners in this category generally use high pressure and/or high flow and spin at slow rotational speeds to maintain high impact. Solid stream nozzles are used to maximize impact.

3d render of a medium impact tank cleaning nozzle

Medium-Impact Cleaning

is required when good impingement is needed to remove residues. Tank cleaners that provide medium impact generally use solid stream nozzles at medium flows and pressures. Rotational speed is slightly faster than high-impact tank cleaners but much slower than free-spinning nozzles to ensure adequate impact on target areas.

Rinsing

is used when distributing cleaning solution throughout the tank without impact to provide sufficient cleaning. Rinsing nozzles are typically free-spinning or stationary spray balls.

Tanks are Getting Larger and Longer

Effective cleaning for all dairy processing applications and tanks of all types, shapes and sizes (5 to 100 ft in diameter), including milk, cheese, yogurt, ice cream, whey, dairy powder, tanker trucks, and more.

A maximum tank diameter reflects a tank cleaning nozzle positioned in the center of the tank with an effective throw of half the tank diameter (the tank radius) to ensure the required coverage and impact (e.g., a 100 ft diameter tank requires a nozzle with an effective spray of 50 ft). The closer the nozzle is to the tank wall, the greater the impact. Keep the clearance, tank material, and drainage capacity in mind.

Optimizing Your Tank Cleaning Operations

Tank cleaning equipment is designed to yield specific performance under specific conditions. A variety of factors can affect results. Even when tank cleaning equipment appears to be working as expected, there may be room for improvement. Adjustments are often possible to achieve more consistent results, improve efficiency, reduce the length of time tanks are out of service, and lower operating costs.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Do tank cleaners require heated water to achieve an effective clean?

Tank cleaners do not always require heated water for an effective clean. Increasing cleaning impact, reach and coverage through higher liquid pressure and flow can eliminate the need for hot water, which can lead to significant energy savings.

How can I shorten cleaning time?

To reduce cleaning time and return tanks to service faster, you can increase impact by increasing flow and/or pressure, increase the temperature of the cleaning liquid, adjust the chemistry-to-water concentration, reposition the tank cleaning equipment, use multiple tank cleaners instead of a single unit, or use a more efficient tank cleaner.

What if my tank has agitators/blades, coils or other internal obstructions?

Internal obstructions block the spray from hitting the tank wall. These obstructions, called “spray shadows”, create areas where nozzles can’t reach.

For a thorough clean:

  • Optimize the location of the nozzles. A powerful tank cleaning machine may be able to provide enough impingement to get around the obstructions and reach tank walls, but it will take longer and require higher flow rates and pressures.
  • Use two to three smaller, less powerful tank cleaners in different locations to ensure complete coverage.
  • If the tank only has a single entry opening, special lances and flanges allow the nozzle turret to moved to multiple locations in the tank.

In addition to the tank cleaner, what else do I need to consider to achieve an effective, efficient clean?

  • Hot water may be needed to remove some residues. In some cases, increasing cleaning impact can reduce or even eliminate the need for hot water and lead to a dramatic reduction in energy use.
  • In some cases, a simple increase in liquid pressure and flow may reduce the number of cycles needed for thorough cleaning. Faster cleaning can reduce downtime while also reducing water and chemical consumption.
  • Internal obstructions, like agitator shafts and blades, block the spray from hitting tank walls. Utilizing equipment with the flexibility to reposition tank cleaning equipment can make it easier to clean tanks of varying shapes and sizes. Specialized lances and adjustable flanges can also be used to precisely position nozzles.
