Think about the technologies you enjoy on a daily basis. Your phone, smartwatch, smart TV, computer, etc. Now, combine this with, let’s say, an ambition to be healthy and the availability of analytics. We can now access deep insights into our health and well-being that also influence our behaviors.

For example, my smart watch measures my average heart rate, counts my number of daily steps, and even estimates my VO2 max. All done simultaneously, in a highly accurate device, that fits snugly on my wrist. Over time, I can see trends and correlations to the number of steps I take, to my weight, along with how the intensity and frequency of my exercises will directly impact my VO2 max. Since we enjoy such detailed information used to calibrate and enhance our health, why not apply similar concepts to assess the “health” of a spray?

Using the SprayScan® software, reduced order models (ROM) and machine learning, we are able to assess the “health” of a spray inside a process. For example, by training our equipment to identify a “healthy” spray inside, say, a gas cooling process, we can then use ROM to help optimize the spray. Along with optimizing the process, we can visualize and quantify the impact of an “unhealthy” spray. Diagnosing unhealthy sprays allows us to suggest corrective actions with incredible accuracy. “Healing” the spray to enhance the process, mitigates risk until the nozzle can be safely replaced.

With technologies like SprayScan, processes that were historically viewed as static, requiring human intervention to correct and maintain, can now become dynamic, changing mid-process to adapt to changes in flow, chemistry or machinery. Much like the terms healthy, unhealthy and healing are analogous to biological processes, diagnosing sprays in similar ways allows physical processes to self-correct and adjust to stimuli based on environmental inputs.
