Solving Typical Application Problems with Air Control Nozzles
Air control nozzles are widely used in thousands of applications in hundreds of industries for blow off ad drying. Here are just a few examples of how manufacturers are effectively using these nozzles to solve quality problems, reduce noise, decrease maintenance time and more.
Auto Assembly Plant's Quality Concerns Lead to Innovative Air Control Installation
A large automotive assembly plant was installing a new truck cab line and searched for a rinsing and drying process that would contribute to overall finish quality after grinding and sanding operations. Irregular surfaces and rolled steel areas posed a difficult challenge. Spraying Systems Co. helped design a system that included flat fan rinsing nozzles on five arches with adjustable ball fittings. For drying purposes, two arches were constructed with 70, 727 WindJet nozzles. The nozzles use existing plant air and provide quick drying with very efficient use of compressed air. And, the 727 WindJet nozzles meet the OSHA sound level requirements specified along the drying portion of the line.
Aluminum Can Manufacturer Uses Spray Nozzles for Cleaning and Drying
A manufacturer had already installed Spraying Systems Co.'s 316 stainless steel FloodJet® nozzles on its conveyor line to wash acid from the rims of aluminum cans. However, they needed a system that would contain the acid within its stage and not contaminate the rest of the line. It was also important to help in the drying of the cans during the production process. Each FloodJet nozzle stage is now followed by two headers, each with 50, 727 WindJet® nozzles in ABS. In the acid wash stage, the air control nozzles create an air curtain that contains the acid. In the two rinse stages, the 727 WindJet nozzles blow-off excess water. 727 WindJet nozzles are also used in the final deionized rinse stage for drying purposes. The high-velocity air control nozzles were specified because of their uniform flat fan spray.
Steel Mill Cuts Costs in Half with 707 WindJet® Nozzles
Over 300 spray nozzles mounted on 12 headers in this steel mill blow water and other solutions off a strip of steel during the galvanizing process. The existing metal nozzles were too costly. Spraying Systems Co. recommended the steel mill replace the metal air control nozzles with the 707 WindJet nozzles constructed of PPS (polyphenylene sulfide). At approximately 50 percent less cost per nozzle, the company saved significantly. The 707 WindJet nozzles were also specified because of their ability to withstand temperatures up to 170°F (77°C) encountered in this application. And, they substantially reduced noise levels - an important consideration for this mill.
Distorted Frosting on Snack Cakes Can Cause Costly Rejection; Air Knife Cuts Cleanly
Large batches of various style snack cakes move from ovens to the ribbon coater at this bakery. The snack cakes pass under an air knife which cuts each ribbon of frosting completely and cleanly. If the ribbon of frosting is not cut properly, the snack cake is rejected. The bakery's existing "home made" system was not only inefficient, it consumed a great deal of air and was difficult to clean. Spraying Systems Co. recommended replacing the system with the 727 WindJet® spray nozzles. The nozzles consume relatively low amounts of air at low pressure, so the bakery saves on utility costs. In fact, the annual dollar savings per year on utility costs was documented at over $40,000 (US dollars). Plus, the spray nozzles are easy to clean, which reduces costly downtime. And, since the nozzles cut so cleanly, the rejection rate was lowered.
